A Beginner’s Guide To Online Dating

Online dating can seem like an overwhelming idea to someone who has never done it before. You may have heard online dating horror stories, but it’s important to note that there are also many success stories. You might be worried about what kind of information you should give and leave out and how to avoid shady people. This article outlines six basic tips for people who are new to online dating.

A Beginner's Guide To Online Dating

1. Use a current photo
It’s important to use a photo that represents what you look like right now. You might have a favourite photo from a year ago, but if it’s not a representation of what you look like currently, you shouldn’t use it. If you want to include the photo you like as an additional photo, make sure you date it. Be honest with dating profile photos, and you won’t catch anyone off guard when you finally meet in person.

2. Don’t detail personal information
If you mention that you have children, don’t list their names, ages, and genders. That is personal information that can attract unsavory people. Predators, for example, will use this information to get close to you and your children. Other information you don’t want to put in an online dating profile includes the name of your work place, school, and income. Giving details about your work makes you easy to find. If you have a beach house, a boat, or vacation in Hawaii every summer, leave these details out because they are clues that you have money and some people seek out people who have money because they want access to it.

3. Answer every question
Answering profile questions helps other people get to know you a little. Don’t tell people to send you a message to find out the answers. No one has the time to send a message to everyone to find out the answers that should be there. You don’t have to be too detailed in your answers, but you do need to answer. Your profile is how you sell yourself. Failing to answer questions means you’ll generate less interest.

4. Don’t ignore your gut
You are, without a doubt, going to get messages from scammers. When you do, you will likely get a funny feeling about the message. He will seem too nice. He will be too romantic in his first message. He will say things you want to hear, but you know he can’t possibly mean them. Scammers are good at saying what people want to hear. If you have a funny feeling, trust yourself and move on.

5. Know what you’re looking for
It’s important for not just yourself, but potential dates, to know what you are looking for when you’re online dating. You can just be looking to meet new people with no commitment, you might want a relationship, or you might be looking for someone who wants to get married. If you’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for, you can say that as well. If you know what you want, you’ll want to meet other people interested in the same.

6. Meet offline
Online dating is just a way to meet new people. You don’t want to have a relationship online for months or years unless your distance requires it. Take distance into account when you begin online dating. Some people are willing to date long distance. Some people will only date within driving distance. Whichever you choose you have to make meeting in real life a priority.

If you’re new to online dating, don’t be afraid to try. It’s a great way to meet new people and weed out the ones who don’t match your criteria.
