How to teach a child to count?

To succeed in the modern world, having analytical mind and being able to think logically is of crucial importance. No doubt that all parents are predicting a bright future for their children and dream about their prosperity. Many of them believe that studying mathematics is the best way to develop a child’s logic. But how can one introduce numbers to a baby and teach him to count?

How to teach a child to count

Memorizing numbers

At the age of two, a child will easily cope with memorizing the counting number, that is being able to count from 1 to 10. Such small children don’t need special mathematics classes. It will be enough to count several times a day together with the child the items he got interested in. For example, you can count:

1) how many cars are standing outside the house;
2) how many bees have flown to a flower;
3) how many steps you need to go;
4) how many squirrels are drawn in a book.

You can make such a “counting” together with the baby, without waiting for a certain age. You can count aloud for your child, starting since birth; all sorts of counting rhymes and poems, mentioning numbers, will be useful.

Initially, the child can only memorize the counting and later he starts to understand it. At the age of two, a child is able to count one apple or two, but three apples – are too many him. You should also teach your little one the concepts of “many – few”, “more – fewer”, showing him vivid examples. Don’t forget that children remember only the things, which are interesting for them. Let the lessons be interesting.

Operating digits

If a 3 – 4 years old child memorized the numbers, you can start teaching him digits. Let the child know that digits indicate a corresponding number of items. For better perception of this material, printed materials should be used – cards and all kinds of books, where next to a digit a corresponding number of things is shown.

To consolidate the knowledge, you can use special text books or print the tasks on your own. Let the young pupil find the missing number, continue numerical series, find the number that stands between these numbers and so on. It’s necessary to monitor the lesson duration (it shouldn’t exceed 10-15 minutes) and pay attention to the child’s reaction.

You shouldn’t scold your child for failing to do something, but on the contrary, you must try to create an atmosphere of success for the little one to be interested in expressing himself and proud of his achievements. You should be patient and then the precious child will make you feel good about his excellent results.
