However, if you are traveling as a family, it may be a little difficult to know which hikes are worth your while. Here are five hikes that are perfect for your family on your next trip to the beautiful island of Oahu.
Manoa Falls Trail
Manoa Falls Trail is perfect for families who love hiking but have younger children. This hike is a little less than a mile and will lead you to the gorgeous Manoa Falls. Unfortunately, there is no swimming allowed in the water at the base of the falls, however, the view alone is worth the short hike. It can be a bit muddy, so prepare yourself in how you dress. This trail is perfect for those who only have a couple hours to spare, but wish to see one of the beautiful waterfalls Oahu has to offer.
Probably the most well known hiking destination on the island is Diamond Head. Located in Waikiki, it can be considered one of Hawaii’s most recognized landmarks. It is a short hike, less than a mile, but it is definitely not a walk in the park. It is definitely something that can be done with children, however be advised that it can get very crowded during peak times of the day. In order to avoid crowds, try to go either early or late in the day. It is best hiked on a clear day, so you are able to see all the beautiful views of Oahu. This is a must see for any level hiker.
Waimano Falls and Pool Trail
The trail to the Waimano Falls and Pool is a gorgeous three mile hike that ends at the beautiful Waimano Falls. At the base of the Falls, are two freshwater pools you can swim in. The hike is relatively shaded and easy and is definitely worth the views. The reward for the hike is definitely the pools that are perfect for swimming or just hanging out with family or friends. There is even a rope swing into one of them that makes the adventure even more fun. This is definitely one of the most fun hiking experiences you will ever have on the island of Oahu. Definitely carve out a few hours to spend and maybe take some lunch along with you. You won’t regret this one!
Olomana Three Peaks Trail
Located in Kailua, the Olomana Three Peaks Trail is a little bit more difficult than the previous hikes mentioned. As noted in the name of the trail, there are three peaks to climb. The first two are moderately easy climbs, however the third is quite difficult and should be left to the more experienced hikers. Three Peaks has a pretty intense incline and because of this, it is probably wise to include older children, but the views are absolutely worth every step!
Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail
On East Oahu, a great spot for family hike is the Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail. Right around two miles, it is a paved trail easy enough for younger children. On a clear day, you may even be able to have views of the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i. Some even report seeing humpback whales during migrating season (November-May). The lighthouse is not open to the public, however you can get close enough to see it. From the trail, some of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu can be seen. This is definitely one to put on your list!
