What is Minimalism?

Many people are turning to minimalism these days, but what exactly is it? Minimalism is a lifestyle choice that advocates clearing clutter from your home and life. Minimalists choose to live with less material items in order to live a more fulfilling life.

What is Minimalism?

We live in a materialistic society where we have been taught that more is better. As a result, we go through life accumulating more and more stuff whether we need it or not. Minimalists adopt a “less is more” philosophy. However, being a minimalist doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of all your stuff and live with practically nothing. It simply means that you keep what you need and get rid of what you don’t.

Human beings are quite adaptable. We can survive and even thrive with just our basic necessities. By taking a minimalist approach to our home and possessions, we simplify our lives in the process. Leading a lifestyle of minimalism can promote less stress and a greater sense of freedom.

Choosing a minimalist lifestyle requires that you take an internal and external inventory. You need to decide what is important to you. Determine what you must have and what you can truly live without. Once you know what you want, start to declutter your life.

Minimalists realize that you have less to worry about when you eliminate the excess. A person may choose to sell a large home that once housed a growing family. Once the children have grown and moved out, the house may be more of a burden than a necessitiy. The job or regular housekeeping and maintenance of a large property may be an added stress. The homeowner may choose to move into a smaller place or travel. A minimalist lifestyle can provide less stress, a sense of freedom and a renewed purpose.

Individual Minimalists

There are no rigid rules for a life of minimalism. Let go of how much or how little you are comfortable with. Some people choose to simply part with the excess clutter in the garage, basement or attic. There are others that choose a small living space, sparse furnishings and a few pieces of artistic decor. There are also people that are true minimalists at heart. These people pack a bag, buy a used RV, and live off the grid, enjoying freedom in a true pioneer fashion. If you opt for a lifestyle of minimalism, you can go small or go for the gusto. The choice is yours.

However you choose to incorporate minimalism into your life, the goal is to free up more time to enjoy and live life to the fullest, rather than being a slave to materialism. Living life with the constraints of constant deadlines and schedules can be very stressful indeed. Running home from work only to run off to other committments, and then return home to cook, clean, go to sleep and start the cycle all over again is hard on the body, mind and spirit. Adopting the minimalist lifestyle can help to reduce the pressures of daily life. If you think minimalism might be right for you, it may well be worth considering.

Clearing out the Clutter

Clutter doesn’t just accumulate in your home. Our minds can become height=”auto” cluttered with worries, responsibilities and the tasks of tomorrow. Minimalism isn’t just about ridding your home of unnecessary items, but adopting a lifestyle that promotes peace and happiness. It is about looking at life from a more positive perspective and enjoying life. Minimalism is the art of living with less and being thankful for the simple things in life. It is about realizing what is important to you and then focusing on those aspects of your life. Minimalism is about taking the time to plant the roses, and then enjoying their beauty and their fragrance.
