The cozy-home edit: change the lighting before buying the sofa
A room can feel very different when the light changes, even if the furniture stays put. Before making a major purchase inspired by a makeover video, try an evening observation of the space you already have.

Notice the uncomfortable spots
Sit where you normally read, talk or watch something. Look for glare, dark task areas and light shining directly into your eyes. Write down the problem instead of assuming the whole room needs a new style.
Try a reversible adjustment
Move an existing lamp to a suitable location, adjust an approved dimmer or change the arrangement within the fixture manufacturer’s limits. Keep cords out of walkways and never exceed a fixture’s bulb rating. Electrical faults need qualified attention.
Evaluate during real use
Use the room for several evenings before deciding what is missing. A purchase can then solve a specific problem, such as a reading light, rather than imitate a photograph. Comfort is a practical outcome: being able to use the room easily matters more than whether every corner looks ready for a social-media tour.
