The group-chat screenshot test: what belongs outside the chat?
A funny group-chat exchange can feel ready-made for a public post. The people in it may see the situation differently, especially when a joke, name or personal detail escapes the audience they expected.
Ask before exporting the conversation
Permission to participate in a chat is not automatically permission to publish it. Ask the people whose messages are visible, and make it easy for them to decline without having to justify their discomfort.
Check more than the names
Profile photographs, timestamps, locations and the surrounding context can identify someone even after a name is covered. A distinctive story may be recognizable to coworkers or friends. Cropping should not create a misleading impression of what was said.
Choose a smaller version
Sometimes the useful idea can be retold in your own words without exposing the exchange. If the humor depends on embarrassing someone who did not agree to be part of a public story, keep it in the original space. A good internet habit respects both the joke and the people who made it possible.
